Abstract Fluctuating soil salinity and competition for light are the main factors affecting plant distribution and performance in coastal salt marshes. The aim of the present study was to assess plant performance by means of non-destructive instrumental methods in a highly heterogeneous natural habitat. More specifically, environmental factors affecting growth and physiological performance of a clonal plant Hydrocotyle vulgaris L. were investigated. I Agder er det et sterkt ønske fra kystkommunene om å tilrettelegge for blå vekst i regionen, men for å realisere dette målet er det behov for faktisk kunnskap om hvilke muligheter havet gir – og utelukker – langs hele Agder-kysten. En slik kartlegging vil være et viktig beslutningsgrunnlag for utvikling av næring knyttet til marin sektor i regionen. The search for reference conditions for stream vegetation in northern Europe

Summary 1. The European Water Framework Directive provides a framework for improving the ecological quality of stream ecosystems, with deviation from reference used as a measure of ecological status. 2. Here we examine the possibility of using less impacted stream sites from Latvia, Lithuania and Poland to establish a Danish reference network for macrophyte assemblages, and as a guiding image for identification of possible references sites within Denmark.
